There are children who want to dream, but cannot—children in Haiti who suddenly lost their homes in an earthquake and are surviving one day at a time, children in the Philippines whose entire family dwells together in the space of a square meter, children around the world who are too poor to go to the hospital even if they are sick. This year, Atomy has again become a Daddy-Long-Legs (from the 1912 novel by Jean Webster) to children who are suffering due to natural disasters and poverty by donating 14 billion KRW (~$11 million) to Compassion, an international child-advocacy organization.

꿈을 꾸고 싶어도 그럴 수 없는 아이들이 있다. 지진으로 한 순간 집을 잃어버리고 겨우 하루를 버티고 있는 아이티의 어린이, 한 평 남짓한 공간에서 온 가족이 지내고 있는 필리핀의 어린이, 가난으로 아파도 병원에 갈 수 없는 전 세계 많은 어린이들이다. 자연재해와 가난으로 고통 받는 전 세계 어린이들을 위해 올해도 애터미가 키다리 아저씨로 나섰다. 국제어린이양육기구 ‘컴패션’에 140억 원을 기부한 것이다.

On August 9, a donation ceremony was held in Orot Hall in Gongju City. A donation in the amount of 14 billion KRW (~$11 million) was made to Compassion this time, 7 billion KRW (~$5.5 million) from the Atomy Corporation and 7 billion (~$5.5 million) from Chairman Han-Gill Park. Including a donation of 12 billion (~$10 million) in October of last year, Atomy has donated a total of 32 billion KRW (~$25 million) to Compassion thus far. The relationship between Compassion and Atomy dates back to last year when Chairman Park contacted the NGO. Chairman Park said, “Children are the future of mankind. I hope that a world where all children can play happily without suffering from poverty and disasters will come soon,” as he promised to donate every year.
Of the many social welfare institutions, Atomy is focused on sharing with Compassion because it is a “nurturing” child-advocacy organization. Compassion is a non-profit organization that nurtures children suffering from poverty and disasters in 27 countries around the world. It was established in 1954 by Reverend Everett Swanson to help orphans during the Korean War. Compassion does not just help one time, it helps children grow into leaders who change their homes, neighborhoods, and society by continuing to support them. The funds from the donation will help children in Thailand, the Philippines, Colombia, Indonesia, and other countries where Atomy has launched in Asia, South America, and Africa. It will be used for 33 different projects such as supporting children suffering from hardships such as COVID-19, civil war, and earthquakes; funding tuition, education, and vocational education; and helping children develop social and emotional skills.

지난 8월 9일 공주 애터미 오롯에서 컴패션 기부식이 열렸다. 이번에 애터미가 컴패션에 기부한 금액은 140억 원으로 애터미 법인이 70억 원을, 박한길 회장이 70억 원을 기부했다. 지난해 10월, 컴패션에 120억 원을 기부한 것 등을 합하면 애터미가 지금까지 컴패션에 전한 후원금은 총 320억 원에 달한다.
국제어린이양육기구 ‘컴패션’과 애터미의 인연은 작년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 박한길 회장이 NGO 측에 먼저 연락을 취했다. 박한길 회장은 “어린이는 인류의 미래다. 모든 어린이가 가난과 재해로 인해 고통을 겪지 않고, 밝고 행복하게 뛰놀 수 있는 세상이 어서 오길 바란다.”라는 뜻을 밝히며 매년 기부를 이어갈 것을 약속했다.
애터미가 많은 사회복지기관 중 컴패션과의 나눔에 열중하는 것은 ‘양육 기구’이기 때문이다. 컴패션은 세계 27개국에서 가난과 재해로 고통 받는 어린이를 양육하는 비영리단체로 1954년 에버렛 스완슨 목사가 한국 전쟁 고아를 돕기 위해 세운 기관이기도 하다.
현재 컴패션은 일회성의 도움이 아니라 어린이가 자립 가능한 성인이 될 때까지 모든 지원을 이어가며 가정과 지역, 그리고 인류 사회를 변화시키는 리더로 성장할 수 있도록 돕는다. 이번 후원금은 태국, 필리핀, 콜롬비아, 인도네시아 등 애터미가 진출한 국가를 포함해 아시아, 중남미, 아프리카 등의 어린이를 위해 사용된다. 주로 코로나19, 내전, 지진 등 재난재해로 고통 받는 어린이들을 후원하고 교육 및 학비 지원, 직업교육, 사회 정서적 능력 개발 등 33개 사업에 쓰인다.

Atomy’s contributions rank highest in scale among the nation’s top 500 companies. Looking at the top 500 companies last year, contributions only made up 0.09% of sales. Atomy was the only one with a percentage of more than 2% of sales. According to CEO Score, sales in the distribution industry increased 10% year-on-year, while donations fell 20.2 billion KRW (~$15 million). However, Atomy has increased its contributions to 24.8 billion (~$20 million), more than double that of 2020. Its proportion of donations to exports was 2.04%, and the proportion to operating profits was as much as 18%. From 2009 to this year, Atomy’s cumulative donations totaled 77 billion KRW (~$60 million).
Atomy’s “DNA of sharing” stems from Chairman Han-Gill Park’s management philosophy. Chairman Park emphasizes, “Companies should be the foundation for the growth of society,” adding, “Companies should be the channels through which money flows, not where money is collected.” As Atomy’s first motto is to “Cherish the spirit,” companies should work for people because people should be the goal in and of itself.

애터미의 기부 규모는 국내 500대 기업을 통틀어서도 최고 수준이다. 지난해 국내 500대 기업의 기부액을 살펴보면 매출 대비 0.09%에 불과했다. 애터미가 유일하게 매출 대비 2%를 넘는다. CEO 스코어에 따르면 유통 업종의 경우 지난해 매출은 전년 대비 10% 증가한 반면 기부금은 202억 원 감소했다. 하지만 애터미는 2020년의 두 배 이상인 248억 원으로 기부액을 늘렸다. 이는 매출 대비 기부금 비중이 2.04%에 달하는 수치로 영업 이익 대비 비중은 무려 18%나 된다. 기부를 시작한 2009년부터 올해까지 누적 기부액은 770억 원에 이른다.
이 같은 애터미의 ‘나눔 DNA’는 박한길 회장의 경영 철학에서 비롯한다. 박한길 회장은 “기업은 사회가 성장하는 밑거름이 돼야 한다.”라며 “기업은 돈이 모이는 곳이 아니라 돈이 흐르는 통로가 돼야 한다.”라고 강조한다. 애터미 사훈의 첫 번째 조항인 ‘영혼을 소중히 여기며’라는 말처럼 “사람은 그 자체로 목적이 돼야하기에 기업은 사람을 위해 일해야 한다.”라고 여긴다.

Atomy participates in various social contribution activities around the world. Following the donation of 10 billion KRW (~$8 million) in 2019 to the “Life Cherishing Mom” fund for single mothers, Atomy has been involved in helping young victims of sexual abuse, donating briquettes and kimchi, establishing an academic institute at Siloam Eye Hospital, supporting the construction of a children’s rehabilitation center at Jeonju Jesus Hospital, and supporting local jobs in Gongju City.
Atomy Run, an annual event that first started in Taiwan and has since expanded to Korea, Malaysia, and other countries, is yet another example of sharing with participation fees donated in its entirety. Moreover, Atomy has assisted in the operation of medical buses in areas with poor public health conditions in Cambodia. Since Atomy started actively helping Compassion last year, South Korea has become the second largest donor to Compassion after the U.S. As a global distribution company, Atomy is actively sharing overseas as its global sales continue to grow. Atomy has been a leader in K-immunity and K-beauty with its Absolute Quality Absolute Price and is now becoming a company that spreads good influence around the world through global contributions.

애터미는 세계 각지에서 다양한 방식으로 사회 공헌 활동을 펼치고 있다. 먼저, 국내에서는 2019년 미혼모를 위한 ‘생소맘(생명을 소중히 여기는 맘)’ 기금 100억 원에 이어 보호 종료 아동·성폭력 피해 아동 돕기, 연탄 및 김장 김치 기부, 실로암안과병원 학술 연구원 건립, 전주예수병원 공공 어린이 재활병원 건립 등 후원, 공주시 지방 재정과 일자리 창출 지원 등을 해왔다.
대만에서 처음 시작한 ‘애터미 런’은 한국, 말레이시아 등지로 확장하며 매년 개최되고 있고 참가비 전액은 기부된다. 또한, 국민 보건 상태가 열악한 캄보디아 진료 버스 운영을 지원하며 글로벌 사회 공헌 활동을 이어가고 있다. 지난해부터 애터미가 컴패션을 적극적으로 돕고 나서자 한국은 미국에 이어 두 번째로 컴패션에 많이 기부하는 나라가 됐다. 애터미는 글로벌 유통기업으로 해외 매출 성장이 지속되고 있는 만큼 해외로의 나눔도 활발하게 펼쳐나가고 있다. 그동안 절대품질 절대제품으로 전 세계에 K면역과 K뷰티를 이끌어온 애터미가 이제는 글로벌 기부를 통해 전 세계로 선한 영향력을 펼치는 회사로 나아가고 있다.
