If you approach a clan that already got a town or castle in their current kingdom they will usually give you the finger. Your own kingdom sucks. I've probably put about 500+ hours in Bannerlord now and can say fairly safely that making your own kingdom sucks. It's never fun to do and it's tolerable to just join a kingdom, stay in it and not do anything. These are the things that have to change to make building your kingdom fun in my opinion. Mercenaries in my case were fairly cheap. Your goal is speedrun to get more nobles in your kingdom. Try with those nobles that have 0 fiefs (there should be few of those from battania mainly as they almost always lose fiefs). Then steal fiefs of nobles nearby (which have only 1 fief) and recruit them.
