[한/영] 글로벌 직접판매, 최근 3년간 연평균 1.7% 성장

중국, 세계 최대 직접판매 시장으로 떠올라… 한국은 3년 연속 3위

전 세계직접판매 시장 규모가 2015년 이래 2018년까지 3년간 연평균 1.7%의 성장세를 보였다. 직접판매협회세계연맹(World Federation of Direct Selling Association, 이하 WFDSA)의 자료에 따르면 지난 2018년 글로벌 직접판매 시장 규모는 1929억 달러(약 214조원)로 2017년의 1906억 달러에 비해 1.24% 성장했다(2018년 불변 달러 및 평균 환율 기준, 이하 같음). 또한 직접판매원수도 2017년 1억1656만 여명에서 1.58% 늘어난 1억1840만 여명으로 집계 됐다.

중국 357억 달러, 미국 353억 달러

2018년 세계 최대의 직접판매 시장은 중국이 차지했다. 중국은 지난해 2017년 대비 2.0% 증가한 357억 3200만 달러의 시장규모로 353억5000만 달러에 그친 미국을 제쳤다. 3위에는 한국이 2017년 대비 2.4% 늘어난 180억 달러(약 19조8600억 원, 2018년 평균환율 기준)로 2015년 이후 4년 연속 자리를 지켰다. 4위인 독일은 2017년 174억9200만 달러에서 지난해 175억2000만 달러로 소폭 증가했으며 일본 역시 2017년 155억7100만 달러에서 156억800만 달러로 0.2% 증가했다. 6위에는 2017년 대비 1.5% 감소한 102억 달러의 매출을 기록한 브라질이 차지했다. 2018년 100억 달러 이상의 직접판매 시장규모를 기록한 국가는 이들 6개국
이 전부다. 7위에는 멕시코(59억 달러), 8위에는 프랑스(54억 달러), 9위에는 말레이시아(53억 달러), 10위에는 대만(39억 달러)의 순이었다. 매출액 기준 시장 규모 상위 10개국의 비중은 79.23%로 2017년 대비 0.3% 늘었다. 이들 10개국 가운데 애터미가 영업하고 있는 국가는 미국, 한국, 일본, 멕시코, 말레이시아, 대만 등 6개국이다.
상위 10개국 이외에 애터미가 영업하고 있는 국가를 살펴보면 태국(29억 달러, 13위), 러시아(25억 달러, 15위), 캐나다(20억 달러, 16위), 필리핀(14억 달러, 21위), 호주(13억 달러, 22위), 싱가포르(3억8000만 달러, 34위) 등의 순이었다. 또 조만간 진출하게 될 국가로는 인도(15억 달러, 19위), 터키(5억5000만 달러, 29위), 베트남(4억4000만 달러, 32위) 등이다.
WFDSA는 전 세계를 아시아태평양, 북미, EU, 중남미, 아프리카, 중동, 기타 유럽 등 7개 권역으로 나누어 각 지역별 직접판매 상황을 발표했다. 이에 따르면 아시아태평양 지역이 전체 직접판매 매출액의 46.21%를 차지했다. 아시아태평양 지역은 지난해 1.8%의 성장률을 보였다. 이어 19.33%의 점유율을 차지한 북미 지역은 지난해 1.1% 성장했으며 EU지역은 18.25%의 점유율을 나타냈다. 전년 대비 2% 성장한 중남미 지역의 매출점유율은 13.03%였다.

판매원, 인도네시아가 1980만명으로 가장 많아

판매원수가 가장 많은 국가는 인도네시아였다. 인도네시아는 지난해 320만여명이 새로이 직접판매원으로 등록, 전체 직접판매원이 1980만명으로 증가, 200만 여명이 감소한 미국을 눌렀다. 미국의 판매원수는 2016년에 2050만 명으로 2000만 명을 넘겼으나 2017년 9.27%, 지난 해 11.08% 줄어들어 1650만 명에 그쳤다. 이어 태국이 1134만명으로 3위에 올랐다. 1000만명이 넘는 직접판매원이 활동하고 있는 국가는 이들 3개국뿐인 것으로 집계됐다.
직접판매원 1인당 평균 매출액이 가장 큰 국가는 독일로 88만9004명의 판매원이 175억2036만 달러의 매출을 올려 연간 1인당 평균 1만9708달러(약 2170만원)의 매출액을 기록했다. 2위는 룩셈부르크로 2500명의 판매원이 4722만 달러의 매출을 올려 1인당 평균 매출액이 1만8886 달러(약 2079만원)에 달했다. 3위에는 7711 달러의 판매원 1인당 평균 매출을 기록한 프랑스가, 4위는 6404 달러의 중국이 차지했으며 영국이 6348 달러로 5위에 랭크됐다. 참고로 한국은 2074 달러였다.
직접판매의 주력제품군은 웰니스제품군과 화장품 및 퍼스널케어인 것으로 나타났다. 지난해 글로벌 직접판매 시장에서 가장 많은 매출을 올린 제품군은 웰니스 제품군으로 전체 매출의 33.2%를 차지, 2017년보다 0.8% 떨어졌다. 화장품 및 퍼스널케어 제품군은 31.2%의 점유율을 보였으며 3위에는 12.8%의 점유율을 보인 가정용품 및 내구재가 차지했다. 이 밖에 의류 및 액세서리가 6.2%, 재정서비스가3.2%를 차지했다.

 

China Rises to World's Largest Direct Selling Market, South Korea ranked #3 for Third Consecutive Year

The direct selling market worldwide has shown a compound annual growth rate of 1.7% for the past three years from 2015 to 2018. According to data from the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA), the global direct selling market stood at $192.9 billion (214 trillion KRW) in 2018, up 1.2% from $190.6 billion the previous year (based on 2018 constant dollar exchange rates). The number of direct salespeople has also increased by 1.58% from 116.56 million in 2017 to 118.4 million.

China at $35.7 billion, the U.S. at $35.3 billion

In 2018, China became the world’s largest direct selling market with sales increasing 2% from 2017 to $35.73 billion, surpassing the U.S. which stood at $35.35 billion. South Korea ranked third, growing 2.4% from 2017 to $18 billion (19.86 trillion KRW, based on 2018 constant dollar exchange rates) and holding its position for 4 years in a row since 2015. Germany ranked fourth, increasing from $17.49 to $17.52 billion, and Japan also rose a slight 0.2% from $15.57 to $15.68 billion. Brazil came in sixth with sales of $10.2 billion, decreasing 1.5% from 2017. These six countries are the ones that recorded sales of at least $10 billion in the direct selling industry in 2018.
Mexico ranked seventh ($5.9 billion), France ranked eighth ($5.4 billion), Malaysia ranked ninth ($5.3 billion), and Taiwan came in tenth ($3.9 billion). These top 10 countries made up 79.23% of the total sales which was up 0.3% from 2017. Atomy is actively operating in 6 of these 10 countries including the U.S., Korea, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, and Taiwan.
The other countries where Atomy is doing business are Thailand (ranked 13th at $2.9 billion), Russia (ranked 15th at $2.5 billion), Canada (ranked 16th at $2 billion), the Philippines (ranked 21st at $1.4 billion), Australia (ranked 22nd at $1.3 billion), and Singapore (ranked 34th at $380 million). Atomy will soon be launching in India (ranked 19th at $1.5 billion), Turkey (ranked 29th at $550 million), and Vietnam (ranked 32nd at $440 million) as well.
WFDSA divided the world into 7 areas: Asia-Pacific, North America, the EU, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and non-EU Europe, announcing the performance data of direct selling in each region. According to the report, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 46.21% of global sales, showing a 1.8% increase from the previous year. The North American region accounted for 19.33% of the market, increasing 1.1%, and the EU region took up 18.25%. Direct sales in Latin America grew 2%, making up 13.03%.


Indonesia With the Most Direct Sellers at 19.8 Million

Indonesia was the country with the highest number of direct sellers at 19.8 million. Last year, 3.2 million new direct sellers registered in Indonesia which brought the total to 19.8 million, surpassing the number of direct sellers in the U.S. which decreased by about 2 million. The number of direct salespeople in the U.S. was 20.5 million in 2016 which was at least past the 20 million mark, but it dropped 9.27% in 2017 and another 11.08% the following year, bringing the number down to 16.5 million. Thailand came in third with 11.34 million direct salespeople. These were the only three countries with over 10 million direct sellers.
The country with the largest average sales per person in direct selling was Germany, who has a total of 889,004 salespeople and posted more than $17.52 billion of sales in 2018, averaging $19,708 (~21.7 million KRW) per person annually. Luxemburg was second on the list with 2,500 direct sellers recording $47.22 million dollars, averaging $18,888 (~20.79 million KRW) per capita. France ranked third with direct sellers averaging $7711 a year, followed by China averaging $6404, and the U.K. ranking fifth at $6348 per salesperson. Korea recorded $2074 in sales per capita.
The main products sold through direct selling were wellness products, cosmetics, and personal care items. Wellness products, which posted the largest sales in the global direct sales market last year, accounted for 33.2% of total sales, down 0.8% from 2017. Cosmetics and personal care products posted 31.2% of the total, followed by household and durable goods taking up 12.8% of sales. Other categories included clothing and accessories at 6.2% and financial products at 3.2%.
